11:14 pm - Unite Against Facism/LMHR Conference tomorrow
|
For those of you who are going to the 100 Club tomorrow afternoon, the conference is less than 5 minutes walk away. So you can come after. The music section of the conference will be in the afternoon anyway. And no, you don't have to be a member of Unite to come, but obviously we would like as many people to join as possible.
If you are up for volunteering to help out on stalls at gigs over the next couple of months please email us at rar_fanzine@yahoo.co.uk or leave a comment with your contact details here. Thanks to those who have already done so.

2:08 pm - UNITE AGAINST FASCISM / LOVE MUSIC HATE RACISM NATIONAL CONFERENCE WITH GUEST SPEAKERS
|
UNITE AGAINST FASCISM / LOVE MUSIC HATE RACISM NATIONAL CONFERENCE
SATURDAY 26th FEBRUARY, 9.30AM-5PM TUC, CONGRESS HOUSE, GREAT RUSSELL STREET, LONDON, WC1
This weekend sees the launch of the campaign to stop the threat of the British National Party (BNP) in May's likely General Election. The BNP will be trying to get their message of race hate disseminated through election broadcasts, mail-shots and other communications. They will be targeting areas where they received a high vote in the 2004 European and London elections and where they have local councillors. The campaign against them will be waged at the ballot box, on the streets - and in music venues and clubs - across Britain.
Activists from across the country will be attending anti-fascist umbrella group Unite Against Fascism's national conference in London. This one day conference will discuss the reality of the fascist threat, how and why the BNP are growing and the strategies to stop them.
As part of the conference, activists and musicians involved in the Love Music Hate Racism ('LMHR') campaign will be discussing the role of music and culture in defeating racism and fascism, and planning a series of events throughout the year - from major regional festivals to small local gigs. It will also be the place where plans for our May Day Trafalgar Square concert, our mega gig to stop BNP leader Nick Griffin in Keighley, Yorkshire, and our Glastonbury Festival nights among others will be finalised.
LMHR events celebrate diversity, show unity against racism, and inspire people to get actively involved in fighting racism and fascism in their local area.
Guest speakers in the LMHR part of the conference include:-
- MOBO Award-winning singer/rapper Estelle - Actor and rapper Asher D, formerly of So Solid Crew - Lisa Moorish, singer with the band Kill City - Damo lead singer of fast-rising indie band Metro Riots - Geoff Martin - the director of anti-sweatshop pop tshirt campaign Ethical Threads, and organiser of the Leftfield stage at Glastonbury - Martin Smith - longtime anti-fascist campaigner, and author of the book 'John Coltrane: Jazz Racism and Resistance'
Other speakers at the conference include:- Billy Hayes (General Secretary, Communication Workers Union); Harry Cohen MP; John Cryer MP; Claude Moraes MEP; Glyn Ford MEP; Iqbal Sacranie Muslim Council of Britain; ; Leon Greenman OBE holocaust survivor; Weyman Bennett ANL ; Lee Jasper National Assembly Against Racism; Yasmin Qureshi Human Rights lawyer; Kat Fletcher NUS.
For full details and to register see below or go to http://www.lmhr.org.uk/events/archives/000279.html#more or call Unite on 020 7833 4916. Registration fees are: £10 organisation delegates, £5 individuals, £3 unwaged/students.
This conference is organised by UAF with CWU and SERTUC, and is supported by TUC, NASUWT, National Assembly Against Racism, Love Music Hate Racism, and Anti-Nazi League.

PRESS QUOTES FROM GUEST SPEAKERS
Asher D, rapper and actor... "I'm asking everyone who wants to fight racism to join me at the Unite Againt Fascism conference on Saturday 26 February. At the conference we'll be talking about how we can come together to stop the BNP from getting an MP in the General Election in May. We'll also be discussing the Love Music Hate Racism campaign - debating how music can help the fight against racism. The more people who come and get involved the easier it'll be to stop the fascists . When you look at the BNP they try to be very articulate, to read and do their research. Don’t be deceived. Right now a lot of the images the media are portraying of black people are just scaremongering. Take this whole Muslim thing—they are just trying to make you scared of these people. We need to open our eyes to what is happening."
Estelle... "THINGS ARE going backwards when it comes to racism-especially with asylum seekers. People are getting real ignorant about it. And the crazy thing is that people think it's OK. Love Music Hate Racism gigs are to raise awareness. You might not change someone's mind straight away but at least you can influence them.”
Damo (Metro Riots).... "To see racism grow in the fiendish way it does into vast parts of the world it's good to know there is a cause that battles these tyrants - I am proud to be part of it"
Lisa Moorish (Kill City) ... "This campaign is all about getting young people involved in fighting racism, and I'm right behind that"
We are also looking for people who would be prepared to volunteer to work on stalls at gigs that bands who support RAR are letting us have over the next couple of months. We want to co-ordinate this on Saturday so please let us know if you are interested by Friday. Please email us at rar_fanzine@yahoo.co.uk. And tell your friends. Many thanks.

10:02 am - Things are calming down (a bit)
|
So, not sure what we're doing the rest of this week, which means a few things:
(1) I can finally clear the rar_fanzine e-mail out and reply to some very patient people.
(2) If anyone wants to suggest things for the next issue of the fanzine, or help out with articles and reviews, we can finally knuckle down to doing some actual work on it.
(3) If anyone in London wants to meet up for a chat about the fanzine, then we're free-ish in the evenings. (You're welcome to meet up and talk about other things if you know us.)
Answer below, send us an e-mail, or give me a ring if you've got my number.
Phil xxx
ps: ChloeRock was GREAT. Rammed full of people, and raised enough money that the next fanzine can be bigger and better. Thanks to Allie and Cam, the bands, and everyone who showed up.

"MUSIC AND THE MOVEMENT" Peter Doherty of Babyshambles joins great radical singer and activist Billy Bragg, and Martin Smith, author of the book "John Coltrane: Jazz, Racism and Resistance" and a member of the Unite Against Fascism steering committee, to discuss the relationship between protest movements, politics, and music, from Leadbelly and Woodie Guthrie in Depression-Era America to Motown, Marvin Gaye, James Brown and the US civil rights movement of the 1960s to Rock Against Racism in Britain in the 70s to Fela Kuti and anti-imperialism, to Love Music Hate Racism today, to name but a few. Why not come to listen and take part in this debate just before enjoying the LMHR/Unite gig at the Astoria immediately afterwards (doors 5.30pm)? Entry ONLY with European Social Forum registration card or with LMHR Astoria ticket.
Sunday
There is an anti-war/anti-Bush demonstration (for more information go to http://www.stopwar.org.uk) starting at 1pm in Russell Square, and marching to Trafalgar Square for speakers and a gig, marking the closing event of the European Social Forum.
Basically, the gig organisers say the music will start at 5pm-ish and finish at 8pm. The gig will feature Asian Dub Foundation, and Peter Doherty and Dot Allison.
As I know a few of our livejournal friends quite like Peter Doherty, the news is that he and Dot should be on between 6pm and 7pm, and ADF should be on between 7pm and 8pm
Who's around for any of the gigs, then? If you see me or Alison come and say hello, and we'll try not to be too stressed.
Finally, a big apology to anyone who's still waiting for a reply to e-mails. We are working on it, but also involved in organising the above gigs. You might have to wait until after the weekend (if we're still alive!)

8:54 pm - European Social Forum in London
|
Nabbed from http://www.lmhr.org.uk
The European Social Forum (ESF) is coming to London this October.
Like a "people's EU summit", activists, NGOs, trade unions, the London mayor's office and many others from across Europe have organised an event which will be packing people into Alexandra Palace and other venues across four days for debates, seminars, demonstrations, and cultural events around the theme "Another world is possible".
The ESF will take in issues from the war on Iraq to third world debt, the environmental threat, refugees and racism, privatisation and multinational corporations and much more. 40-50,000 mainly young people from all over Europe are expected to attend. There will be anti-war demonstration with rally and gig in Trafalgar Sq on the Sunday (17th), with live performances from Asian Dub Foundation, Peter Doherty and Dot Allison
For more info and to register as a delegate go to http://www.fse-esf.org
Love Music Hate Racism has been asked to take part, to help raise within the ESF the vital issues of racism and the rise of fascism across Europe, and how we can best resist these threats.
The LMHR gigs are intended as a major cultural attraction for those attending the ESF, and also are part of our fundraising drive for the LMHR campaign to stage major free anti-racism festivals in London and the North next May. LMHR events during the ESF are as follows:
FRIDAY 15th OCTOBER, 5.45pm-9pm LMHR presents "RAP, GUNS, AND RACISM" - debate + gig
ESF Music space, Alexandra Palace, London N22
A debate on racism in Britain, focusing on issues such as the demonisation of black music by press and politicians, police racism and stop-and-search, Islamaphobia, the scapegoating of asylum seekers, the activities of fascist parties like BNP, and above all how we can fight back against these things. The debate will be discussing politicians' and the media's obession with blaming the black community and 'black music' for the alleged rise in gun & drug crime, and related violence. The debate will ask is gun crime a problem only for the black community, what exactly is 'black on black crime', and is black or 'urban' music like garage and hip-hop responsible for fuelling crime and violence, merely reflecting reality, or something else? The debate will reflect on racism in the UK through the experience of young blacks, Asians and whites, and ask how can best challenge it. Following the debate will be a two-hour showcase of the best in British black music. Line-up: Debate (6-7pm): ASHER D, SKEME & BIG P, COREY JOHNSON, WEYMAN BENNETT (Unite Against Fascism), SKINNYMAN (tbc), HARDKAUR Gig following debate (7-9pm): All above PLUS - RAS KWAME, FAITH SFX, KANO, 2MUCH, LADY FURY, DJ SAMURAI, BLADE, SO REAL, NAYDEAN
ASHER D (formerly with So Solid Crew). Asher, an acclaimed actor and rapper, was jailed for possession of a firearm two years ago. He'll be bringing his experience of the British criminal justice system and music industry to bear on the debate. WEYMAN BENNETT, joint secretary of Unite Against Fascism and national organiser of the Anti Nazi League. Weyman, who has also stood for parliament as a Socialist Alliance candidate, has been a political activist and anti-racism campaigner for over 20 years. He was the national organiser of the campaign against the Criminal Justice Bill in 1994-95.
The debate is open to everyone and questions and points from the audience will be very much encouraged.

11:23 am - Fanzine joins Babyshambles tour
|
We are very pleased to announce that Babyshambles' official merchandise stall will be selling the fanzine on the rest of the tour.
If you can't see it on the stall, it might be because they've not been given a big enough stall space. Just ask, and they should be able to sell you a copy.
They also have Love Music Hate Racism T-shirts and Unite Against Fascism material available.
Thanks very much to Babyshambles for this.

4:00 pm - Just to whet your appetites...
|
...here is the editorial from the fanzine
SO WHY A FANZINE?
Why are we doing this? With all the new and exciting bands emerging at the moment, and a thriving guerrilla culture springing up based around the internet, why bother with something as frankly old-fashioned as a fanzine? And a “political” fanzine at that?
There are a couple of reasons. We thought that, while the internet is great for organising things, there’s often no record of what’s gone on. We want to go some way towards documenting the explosion of creativity that is appearing in music, at the same time as fighting racism and the Nazis of the BNP.
When the original founders of Rock Against Racism (RAR) set it up in the 1970s, the issue was the rise of the Nazi National Front, and the willingness of some rock musicians to adopt their slogans and imagery.
When Eric Clapton declared from the stage that racist Tory MP Enoch Powell “was right”, RAR’s founders sent a letter to the NME. In it they said, “Come on Eric… Own up. Half your music is black. You’re rock music’s biggest colonist. You’re a good musician but where would you be without the blues and R&B?
“You’ve got to fight the racist poison otherwise you degenerate into the sewer with the rats and all the money men who ripped off rock culture with their cheque books and plastic crap. We want to organise a rank and file movement against the racist poison in music. We urge support for Rock Against Racism.”
RAR was one of the first organisations to mix black and white bands at gigs. Working closely with the Anti Nazi League, it organised concerts and festivals all over Britain, attracting thousands of people to the biggest anti-racist events since the 1930s.
The most memorable RAR event was the April 1978 Carnival Against the Nazis. 100,000 people marched from Trafalgar Square through London’s East End—the heart of National Front territory—to a Rock Against Racism concert in Victoria Park, Hackney. X-Ray Spex, The Clash, Steel Pulse and Tom Robinson were on the bill—a diverse selection of music for a diverse multicultural crowd.
RAR also had a fanzine, Temporary Hoarding. The words on the front cover of this issue are the words used on Temporary Hoarding’s first issue. We think they’re still as relevant as ever.
The Nazis of the BNP failed to win a European Parliament seat or a Greater London Assembly seat in June, largely down to the work of campaigning organisations like Unite Against Fascism and Love Music Hate Racism, which we at RAR are proud to be a part of.
But the BNP still got over three quarters of a million votes nationwide, and still have over 20 councillors across the country. We need to keep up the fight against them.
As Steven Wells explains on the page opposite, the Nazis hate our music. They hate the way it brings us together. That’s why we want to be part of organising resistance to them.
We also want to give people a chance to write about the bands and issues they’re interested in, rather than having it dictated to them by the music press. Judging by the response we had to this first issue, lots of people want to write. If you’re one of them, get in touch.
We’re trying to fit as much as we can in every issue. If you want to write about music, racism or resistance, or respond to anything in this issue that you liked or disagreed with, please get in touch.
There are many people who have made producing this fanzine easier and have helped loads with the Rock Against Racism nights. We would like to thank Geoff Martin, BWTUC, Ethical Threads and the Left Field, Allie and Cam, Kate D and Katie J, Mayer Nissim, Richard Rose, Darren Wall, Martyn and Bobby, Rosie, Peter Doherty, Steve Lamacq, and all our contributors and friends for help, advice, listening to our ramblings, and making sure we could produce this fanzine. We hope you like it.

1:32 pm - Problems with printers
|
So I phoned the printers today. "What time should I pick up the fanzine?" I ask.
"What fanzine?" they ask. Apparently the person who deals with my production is off sick and hadn't told them I needed it today. They told me I couldn't have it until Friday.
So I explained how important the fanzine is in the calmest and politest way I could, and now they're getting it to me tomorrow at 3pm. Which kind of messes up my plans to go to Manchester tomorrow morning before Babyshambles. But I will get up there in the evening. With fanzines.
Apologies to people who were expecting to get one at The Others tonight. I'm as disappointed as you are.

5:05 pm - An introduction...
|
Hi, I'm Phil. I am involved in producing the fanzine for Rock Against Racism, part of Love Music Hate Racism. LMHR and RAR have been involved in putting together a number of successful gigs across London (for details see www.lmhr.org.uk). We invited people to contribute to our new fanzine six or seven weeks ago. When I find what we wrote I'll post it up here so you can have an idea what we're about. I'll also post the editorial from the first issue.
I thought I'd start this Livejournal to let you know about what's going on with the fanzine, and to provide a point of contact if you want to get in touch or help out.
We've been overwhelmed by the response from people who want to write, send us demos and help sell the fanzine. This is somewhere where you can ask questions you think other people might want to know the answers to. If there are more specific questions, e-mail us at rar_fanzine@yahoo.co.uk
The first fanzine is back from the printers tomorrow. In it will be loads of stuff, including:
Steven Wells on black and white rock music Geoff Martin on RAR at Glastonbury, and last time round George Binette on Morrissey and immigration Louise Trainer on how to organise your own RAR/LMHR gig Mayer Nissim on setting up an independent record label Kevin Panton on being young and black in Britain Kate Baker interviews Special Needs Katie Jacobs and Phil Whaite speak to Lisa Moorish from KillCity Allie Bailey on DIY Mark Thorburn on the London scene Andrew Noone on the scene in Wigan Sian Lowe speaks to Kaiser Chiefs Jamie Fullerton on Soft Hearted Scientists Fitz and Lisa Mook on the Flook nights in London Richard Day reviews The Libertines' new album Katie Fitzgerald reviews The Futureheads live Miriam Fahey reviews Wolfman live Ross Bennett reviews Kain live Christine Crowther reviews Cherubs and The Go! Team live Phil Whaite reviews Joyfest Katy Heppell reviews Gig in the Garden Kate Baker and Katie Jacobs review Rock Against Racism at Infinity Julie Zerbib reviews Curiosa Anne McMeekin reviews The Mark Lanegan Band's Bubblegum and Devendra Banhart's Rejoicing in the Hands Sarah Peck reviews Tim Arnold's Lokatura Allie and Cam on the ChloeRock nights in London
So, quite a lot of stuff, then.
The fanzine is 16 pages, and will cost £1.50 in person and £2 by post.
One shop so far has very kindly agreed to stock it. They are Bookmarks, 1 Bloomsbury Street, London WC1B 3QE. They should have copies from Thursday 23 September.
We will post here regularly with details of gigs where we will have copies of the fanzine. This week, for example, we will have fanzines for sale at: Club NME at Koko in Camden on Wednesday 22 Babyshambles in Manchester on Thursday 23 Rock Against Racism at Infinity in London on Thursday 23 Special Needs/The Rocks/The Barbs in Manchester on Saturday 25 With more gigs to come as and when we know about them. If you're going to be at any gigs and would like copies to sell, let us know and we'll try to work something out.
If you would like to buy a copy by post, please send a cheque or postal order for £2 payable to "Rock Against Racism" to PO Box 2566, London N4 1WJ. When you've posted the cheque, please send us an e-mail to let us know it's on its way.
If you would like to send us demos, please don't use the PO box. E-mail us and we'll give you another address to send them to.
Thanks very much
